AEA imagery
2
Imagery . . . Words, phrases or passages that evoke emotional responses in readers. Visual Auditory Tactile Olfactory
3
Your assertion War is__________________ Innocence is_______________
Peace is________________
4
You need to decide/brainstorm
What do passages containing imagery in this novel show us? How does the imagery show your assertion? This should be the FIRST thing you deal with and think about.
5
After you have it mapped out
Begin writing and give evidence: War is maddening. “Everything began to be inside out. The man next to me at night, coughing his stomach inside out. That’s when things began to change.” Is this imagery? Does it show war is maddening? How?
6
Thus, you needed to talk about imagery for each piece of evidence
“Everything began to be inside out. The man next to me at night, coughing his stomach inside out. That’s when things began to change.” How is this imagery? This is what the prompt asked us . . .you need to answer the prompt!! Thus, you needed to talk about imagery for each piece of evidence “With this vivid picture painted in the reader’s mind of a corporal with a different head on his body makes the scene seem unreal and crazy.” imagery This means maddening

With this vivid picture painted in the reader’s mind of a corporal with a different head on his body makes the scene seem unreal and crazy. One could only imagine looking at a person and all of the sudden seeing a different face knowing that it cannot really be there. That would drive a person mad fairly quickly. Now, you can begin to layer literary terms. First, you need to make sure you have talked about imagery and how it shows that war is madness.

With this vivid picture painted in the reader’s mind of a corporal with a different head on his body makes the scene seem unreal and crazy. One could only imagine looking at a person and all of the sudden seeing a different face knowing that it cannot really be there. That would drive a person mad fairly quickly. The figurative language “turned inside out”, used by Leper adds to the maddening image of war.

You must remember: AEA paragraphs are just that. PARAGRAPHS. There should be NO separate introductory paragraph! You must not use 1st or 2nd person . . You, we, our, my, or I You need to follow proper MLA form. The period goes after the parenthetical documentation.
10
Introduce or set up quotes
Make your paragraph (and later your essay) flow logically A. When selecting your pieces of evidence, put the one that happens first in the novel first. B. Use transitional words within your paragraphs. “In addition”, “furthermore” C. Make sure you prove your assertion. (War is maddening.” D. Make sure you answer the prompt. (How does Knowles use imagery to comment on either war or peace?)
11
Use apostrophes correctly. There were way too many errors in this
Follow the pattern: Assertion, Evidence, Analysis, Evidence2, Analysis2. Correctly punctuate names of works: Novels are underlined when you handwrite. Short stories are quoted.
