3 Data Governance and Management
Should we call this Data Governance and Management or Information Governance and Management? The terms data and information are used interchangeably in the business world but I believe there is a fundamental difference: Data is the lowest level that a business unit or function collects, uses and retains details about themselves, their customers, their trading environment, in fact anything which is of importance to their business. Data is collected as an integral process of doing business and can be stored and used in both a structured and unstructured format. Information is data either in its raw form or derived in some way that has context and meaning; and is presented, stored and use to inform the business. Information has to be presented whether from a structured or unstructured source in a format that can be understood and applied.
