Agenda for the Day Any questions before we begin?
Creative Writing Assignment…Short Stories due….October 11. That is today!! “Writing Process” exam….to be taken this Friday, October 14th. Exam review! Any questions before we begin?

Dialogue -Using dialogue is a good way to add interest to your piece of writing. Like all use of detail, it makes your description of an event more vivid and convincing. Tips: -Write dialogue as speakers actually speak. (People often interrupt each other.) -Keep the conversation moving along. (Characters don’t have to say everything. Leave some things to the reader’s imagination.

Exam Review

Continue… -Present the dialogue so it is easy to read. (Indent every time someone new speaks and identify the speaker if it isn’t clear who is talking. Punctuating Dialogue: -Commas are used to set off the exact words of the speaker from the rest of the sentence. This is considered direct dialogue. Eg: The executive said, “Did you know that computers can now speak with an accent?”

Continue… - Periods and commas are ALWAYS placed inside quotation marks. - Question marks and exclamation points are placed inside the quotation marks when it punctuates the quotation; it is placed outside when it punctuates the main sentence. -When you are reporting or summarizing what someone said, it is not necessary to use quotation marks. This is called indirect dialogue. Eg: The executive said that computers can now speak with an accent. -The words if and that often signal dialogue that is being reported rather than quoted.
