1 Interactions Among Living Things
6.LS2.2 Determine the impact of competitive, symbiotic, and predatory interactions in an ecosystem.

2 Organisms have characteristics that help them to survive and reproduce in their environment. One characteristic that makes an individual better suited to a specific environment may become common in the species through a process called natural selection

3 In natural selection, individuals whose unique characteristics are well-suited for the environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. Offspring that inherit these traits also live to reproduce.

4 Adaptations are the behaviors and physical characteristics that allow organisms to live successfully in their environments.

5 Communication shows how organisms may use both physical characteristics and behaviors as adaptations to their environment. Just as a person can send messages with words and body language, animals communicate with both auditory methods, or using sound, and visual methods, or displays that are seen.

6 Communication may involve information that will help organisms to locate food, find and attract mates, defend territory, or avoid becoming another organism’s meal.

7 Sometimes auditory signals are used a means to scare off predators, or animals who hunt others.

8 Visual communication involves displays, postures, or gestures which may be either permanent or temporary. Visual communication is more common during the day when organisms are more easily seen.

9 The role of an organism in its habitat is called its niche
The role of an organism in its habitat is called its niche. A niche includes what type of food the organism eats, how it obtains its food, and what other organisms eat it.

10 Two major types of interactions among organisms are competition and predation. The struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resources is called competition.

11 An interaction in which one organism kills another for food or nutrients is called predation. The organism that does the killing is the predator and the organism that is killed is the prey. Even though cows and giraffes don’t kill their prey, they are considered predators because they eat plants.

12 Symbiosis is any relationship in which two species live closely together and at least one of the species benefits. There are three main types of symbiotic relationships and they are mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism.

13 A relationship in which both species benefit is called mutualism
A relationship in which both species benefit is called mutualism. A relationship in which one species is benefitted and the other is neither harmed nor helped is commensalism.

14 A relationship in which one organism lives with, on, or inside another organism harming it is called parasitism. The organism that benefits is called a parasite and the one it lives on is called a host.
