The Taxi By Amy Lowell When I go away from you The world beats dead Like a slackened drum. I call out for you against the jutted stars And shout into the ridges of the wind. Streets coming fast, One after the other, Wedge you away from me, And the lamps of the city prick my eyes So that I can no longer see your face. Why should I leave you, To wound myself upon the sharp edges of the night? S – none I – jutted stars, ridges of the wind, sharp edges of the night F – simile: The world beats dead / like a slackened drum – the world is lifeless - personification: Streets coming fast…wedge you away from me – distance between her and her lover - personification: the lamps of the city prick my eyes – the bright lights obscure her vision T – tone: sad, sorrowful, despair - theme: leaving a loved one is difficult and painful

TO THE VIRGINS, TO MAKE MUCH OF TIME. by Robert Herrick Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a-flying : And this same flower that smiles to-day To-morrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, The higher he's a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, And nearer he's to setting. That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer ; But being spent, the worse, and worst Times still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time, And while ye may go marry : For having lost but once your prime You may for ever tarry. S – flowers = youth I – gather ye rosebuds, glorious lamp of heaven (sun) F – personification: Old time is still a- flying – time doesnt stop - personification: this same flower that smiles to-day – flower that blooms - personification: stanza 3 – sun is rising, but will set soon - metaphor: the glorious lamp of heaven, the sun – the sun is like a lamp lighting the world T – tone: urgent, warning - theme: do not waste your youth; get married while you are still young and beautiful
