Being a Great Friend Having Many Friends Getting on, Falling out This assembly continues to focus on what makes a “Great Friend” Sometimes when we talk about friendship we think about one “special friend” or a Best Friend Forever (BFF) But we ALL have more than one friend. Where, apart from school, do you have friends? (pause for responses) a time to reflect © Mirror Assemblies - CB October 2015

Who has had a friend in this school who has moved away? (Hands up) How else can people keep in touch? (Pause for responses) Is it easy to carry on being friends when you don’t live near each other? (Pause for responses) Next I am going to read a poem that talks about the diversity of friendship. (Do invite children to close their eyes as you read it as some children find it easier to concentrate with their eyes closed. How do you keep in touch? © Mirror Assemblies - CB October 2015

The Crayon Box That Talked – By Shane Derolf
Getting on, Falling out The Crayon Box That Talked – By Shane Derolf While walking in a toy store the day before today, I overheard a Crayon box with many things to say "I don't like Red!" said Yellow. and Green said, "nor do I" and no one here likes Orange, but no one knows quite why. We are a Box of Crayons that really doesn't get along" said Blue to all the others. "Something must be wrong!" Well, I bought that Box of Crayons, and took them home with me, and laid out all the Crayons so the Crayons could all see. They watched me as I coloured with Red and Blue and Green. And Black and White and Orange, and every colour in between. They watched as Green became the grass, and Blue became the sky. The Yellow sun was shining bright on White clouds drifting by. Colours changing as they touched, Becoming something new they watched me as I coloured. They watched me 'til I was through. And when I'd finished, I began to walk away. and as I did the Crayon Box had something more to say "I do like Red!" said Yellow and Green said, "So do I, and Blue you are terrific, so high up in the sky!" "We are a Box of Crayons Each of us unique, But when we get together, the picture is complete!“ What do you think this poem is telling us? © Mirror Assemblies - CB October 2015

We were all once new at this school
"I do like Red!" said Yellow and Green said, "So do I, and Blue you are terrific, so high up in the sky!" "We are a Box of Crayons Each of us unique, But when we get together, the picture is complete!“ Getting on, Falling out (The slide has the last 2 verses. You may prefer to just ask the children to read these 2 verses rather than the entire poem.) Is it easy to be a “great friend”?
Not always. We ALL need to work at it – even adults! It needs to be a balanced relationship. We need to value each other’s qualities and strengths We need to respect each other’s fears and worries. We need to listen to each other. Getting on, Falling out (Explore Slide with Pupils and refer back to poem.) © Mirror Assemblies - CB October 2015

Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow; Don't walk behind me, I may not lead; Walk beside me, and just be my friend. Getting on, Falling out We all need a variety of friends. This does NOT mean we cannot have a best friend, but that we should have a wide range of friends in different places and different activities, so we gather a great understanding of ways of being a “great friend to others”. Let us go out today looking at how we can be an even better friend in different places. Please think about the words on the slide as you leave the assembly. © Mirror Assemblies - CB October 2015
