A two-step equation worked out
Two – Step Equations How are they solved? What do they look like? You isolate the variable to one side of the equation. You must remove both numbers and both operation that are connected to the variable. Use the inverse operations. Remove add/subtract first, then multiplication / division next. 4x – 5 = 19 (Y ÷ 3) + 2 = 6 A two-step equation worked out 4x – 5 = 19 +5 = +5 4x = 24 4x ÷ 4 = 24 ÷ 4 X = 6 4x – 5 = 19 Remove add/subtract 4x = 24 Remove mult. / division x = 6 (y÷3) + 2 = 6 -2 = -2 y ÷ 3 = 4 y ÷ 3 x 3 = 4 x 3 y = 12
3
Practice Explain the first step to solve this equation: 5x – 10 = 25
Explain the second step to solve this equation: Y + 12 = 20 4
4
Practice Solve: Y - 9 = 1 6 Solve: 5 + 7x = 54
5
Practice Identify the Error: Y + 11 = 17 7 7 ∙ y + 11 = 17 ∙ 7
- 11 = -11 y = 108 Identify the Error: 8x – 16 = 72 - 16 = 16 8x = 56 x = 7
6
4x + 3 + x + 6 = 49 5 + 3y – 2 + 4y – 1 = 51 Combining Like Terms
Combine the Terms: 4x x + 6 = 49 Combine the Terms: 5 + 3y – 2 + 4y – 1 = 51
