2 Figure 1 Regulators of Tissue-Resident Memory T Cells in Allergic Lung Disease Tissue-resident memory T (Trm) cells are crucial in driving allergic lung disease. The above schematic summarizes the conclusions of Pepper and colleagues that tissue-resident memory CD4+ T cells are critical in the outcome of allergic exacerbations to inhaled allergens, such as house dust mites (HDM). The generation, recruitment, retention, and function of these cells is regulated on multiple levels including by B cells, provision of IL-2 signaling and competitive differentiation with Tcm (central memory T) cells. Importantly tissue residence exposes Trm to a distinct network of “innate” cells in the lungs with proven roles in allergic airway disease including innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), alveolar macrophages, and the lung epithelium.
