1 Third Grade Parent Information
Classroom Management Money Third Grade Parent Information Classroom procedures will be discussed the first few weeks of school and reviewed as needed. We will set high expectations for the class and expect the students to follow them. If a child chooses not to follow a procedure or falls below our expectations for them, he/she will face a consequence. All third grade classes use a clip chart. Students have the opportunity to clip up for exceeding expectations and clip down for not meeting expectations. Children who reach the top will have the opportunity to call home and let their parents know that had a super day! Children that end up on the bottom section of the chart may be asked to call home to discuss their behavior with parents. When it is necessary to send money to school, please send correct change or check with your child’s name and purpose of the money labeled on the outside of the envelope. Breakfast It’s proven—students who eat breakfast do better in school. All Caney Valley Elementary Students, regardless of qualifications, are offered a free breakfast daily. Breakfast is served starting at 7:30a.m. Caney Valley Elementary Cell Phones, Electronic Devices, Toys, & Hats Mrs. Corder Please keep these items at home to keep them from getting lost. They can also be a distraction in the classroom. We appreciate your cooperation. Shorts can be worn until Fall Break and again after Spring Break. We also ask that girls wear shorts under dresses. This will help when they are playing outside and in PE. Please do not send your child to school if they have had a fever within the past 24 hours. State Testing Starting in third grade your child will be taking the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test (OCCT). The two areas the students are tested in are Reading and Math. The OCCTs will be administered in April. Binders Make Up Work The binder has contact information, school calendar, and the third grade newsletter/calendar in plastic sleeves. There is one folder in the binder with one pocket for papers that need to be left at home and the other pocket for any homework that your child may have. If you need to send a note to school please put it in the folder. 3rd Grade Retention Policy Students are responsible for checking for any work that they missed during their absence. Students are expected to get all of their make-up work completed within a reasonable amount of time. Days Missed: 1 to 2 Time Allowed: 2 days for every 1 missed Days Missed: An Excess of 2 Time Allowed: 1 day for each day missed In 2011, Oklahoma amended the Reading Sufficiency Act (RSA) to ban social promotion (promotion of a child based on age rather than academic achievement). The new law requires schools to retain students who do not pass a reading test and do not meet other criteria for exemptions by the end of third grade. Homework We want our students to read everyday for 20 minutes. This can include fluency practice and AR books. Your child will also be taking a Spelling Test every Friday. Any work not finished in class is considered homework.
