What is a PSA A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT(PSA) is used to address an issue to educate the public. Public service announcements, or PSA's, are short messages produced on film, video, or audiocassette and given to radio and television stations. Generally, PSA's are sent as ready-to-air audio or video tapes, although radio stations (especially community or public stations, such as campus radio or National Public Radio affiliates) sometimes prefer a script that their announcers can read live on the air. They can be done very simply with a single actor reading or performing a message, or they can be elaborate, slickly- produced productions with music, dramatic storylines, and sound or visual effects.

Tips for writing a PSA Getting ready to write your PSA:
1. Choose points to focus on. Don't overload the viewer or listener with too many different messages. 2. Brainstorm. This is also a good time to look at the PSA's that others have done for ideas. 3. Check your facts. It's extremely important for your PSA to be accurate. 4. Identify a "hook". A hook is whatever you use to grab the listener or viewer's attention.

PSA EXAMPLE :30 The average parent thinks they're prepared for a medical emergency. They know if their child has allergies. Or how to call 911. But the average parent doesn't know how to treat severe burns. Or what to do when a child isn't breathing. Maybe you should ask yourself-do I want to be an average parent? You can't always prevent emergencies, but you can be better prepared. So talk to your healthcare provider, or call ASK-H-R-S-A. A public service of this station and Emergency Medical Services for Children.

PSA EXAMPLE Prevent Child Abuse America 2009 CAP Month 30-second PSA Spot Script Communities statewide are recognizing that healthy childhood experiences are not just good for children, but good for their communities as well.   It’s simple really. The actions we take to promote healthy child development are the very actions that help to prevent child abuse and neglect, like parent-child interaction, reading and constructive play. Unfortunately, children are sometimes exposed to intensive stress like child abuse and neglect. Too much stress is bad for anyone and can be devastating to child development. This is where prevention comes into play, however, and Prevent Child Abuse Iowa’s new signature campaign, “Pinwheels for PreventionTM,” is defining prevention in a number of ways in communities across the state. 8 PSA example “Get Help: Support someone you love” Think about your mother. Your sister. Your girlfriend. One in six women is a victim of sexual assault. Now think about your father. Your brother. Your best friend. Men are victims too. Rape can happen to anyone. Call the National Sexual Assault Hotline today to learn how to support someone you love. Call HOPE or visit rainn.org, that’s R-A-I-N-N–dot—O-R-G.
