1 When I saw there was a facilities redesign project I was excited
When I saw there was a facilities redesign project I was excited. At last I could solve all the problems of the media center -- or so I thought. It was much more difficult than I ever expected it to be. Our media center is approximately 28’x42’ with five rooms off the main media center: 1. server and storage, 2. media specialist office, 3. workroom, 4. video and big book storage, and 5. speech language pathology classroom. The Seattle Public Library video gave me a new perspective in my planning. I stopped trying to rearrange the current problems and started looking instead at what we needed to function more smoothly and productively. In order to allow for clear visibility of the students, I left our book shelves as they currently stand. I do, however, want to incorporate the bookstore model to make it easier for students to find books and to give more appeal to the books. In addition, I also left the media specialist office, speech language pathology classroom, and server room as they currently are. I then turned my attention to the work areas. Our current media center does not have the SmartBoard placed in the most optimal position for students or faculty members. It is currently placed above a section of book shelving. It is difficult for faculty members to reach for presentations and impossible for students to reach. The placement of the SmartBoard in relation to the tables’ position makes it difficult to view during student lessons and faculty presentations. In my redesign, the SmartBoard would be moved to allow access to students and give better viewing. The current area allotted for student instruction would be moved in front of the SmartBoard and tables would circle the outer edges of this instructional area to allow for students to sit in both the floor and at tables depending on the activity. Repositioning the tables would also give better viewing for faculty members during meetings. The circulation desk will take advantage of a floor plug and wireless capabilities in order to be moved to a more centralized location. Next, the bookshelf that once was where the SmartBoard now sits will be moved beside the main entrance to display new releases including highlighted books and new periodical issues. Computers were at a bulky study carrel that took up a huge expanse of floor space. In the new design, computers will be moved across the room and placed on tables. This will not only help with space but will also put computers at a better level for student use. The two shelving units that are on the wall where the computers are being moved will be divided with one shelf being moved to the workroom to hold teaching resources and the other being moved to the room currently housing videos and big book storage. Two other shelving units will be swapped – the chapter books will be housed on a shelf that currently holds past school year books and assorted decorative pieces and the shelf currently used for chapter books will now house reference books. In continuing the redesign, the video and big book storage room will be weeded. This room contains many videos, but most of these are VHS tapes. Very few classrooms have VCRs so these tapes are now obsolete. The remaining DVDs will be placed on the shelf moved into the room. The rack holding the big books and book sets will be moved into the workroom. This will free up a room for us to began creating a technology room with recording studio. Finally, for the time being, two rugs will be moved to create quite reading areas on each side of the circulation desk. In the future I hope to be able to add comfortable seating to this area. In addition to these changes to help make our media center more functional, I hope to also include some aesthetic improvements.

I took their thoughts and suggestions and compiled them with my own thoughts to help create a design I feel would be more conducive to instruction and exploration in the media center.
