Segregation vs. Integration:
Jim Crow Laws- laws put in place by southern states to avoid integration
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)- declared separate but equal facilities were constitutional
Brown v. Board of Education (1954)- overturned Plessy, “separate is inherently unequal”
De jure segregation- segregation by the government or law, is illegal
De facto segregation- segregation by choice, is legal

6. Federal Civil Rights Laws
Affirmative action – Govt. mandated special hiring for minority groups to right the past wrongs of discrimination
Quotas - # hired has a minimum # of minorities hired
Reverse discrimination – non-minority groups denied hiring or admission b/c of Affirmative Action or Quotas
UC Regents v. Bakke (1978)- quotas are unconstitutional, but affirmative action is constitutional in some cases
