12. 1  It happened afterwards that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was Tamar, and Amnon the son of David fell in love with her.
2  And Amnon was so frustrated that he felt ill because of Tamar his sister, because she was a virgin, and it was too difficult in Amnon’s eyes to do anything with her.

13. 6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill, and the king came to see him. Amnon said to the king,
“Please let Tamar my sister come, and let her bake two cakes before my eyes that I may eat from her hand.”
7 So David sent to the house for Tamar, saying,
“Please go to the house of Amnon your brother and prepare food for him.”

14. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar,
“Bring the food to the private room that I may eat from your hand.” So Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them to Amnon her brother in the private room. 11 When she brought them near to him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her,
“Come, lie with me, my sister!” 12 Then Tamar said to him,
“No, my brother! Do not force me, for such a thing has not been done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing!

15. 13 As for me, where should I take my disgrace

14 But he was not willing to listen to her voice. He overpowered her, and raped her, and bedded her.
15 Then Amnon hated her very deeply, for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. So Amnon said to her, “Get up and go.”

“No, because this evil in sending me away is greater than the other you have done to me.” But he was not willing to listen to her.
17 Then he called his young man who was serving him and said,
“Send this woman from me to the outside, and bolt the door behind her!”

17. 18 Now there was a long-sleeved robe on her, for so they clothed the daughters of the king who were virgins, in robes. His servant put her outside, and he bolted the door behind her.
19 Tamar put ashes on her head, and she tore the long-sleeved robe which was on her. She put her hand on her head, and she went away, crying out as she went.

18. 20 Absalom her brother said to her, “Was Amnon your brother with you

29. 4 So the Tekoite woman spoke to the king…
13 “But why have you plotted like this against the people of God? By speaking this word, he is guilty not to bring back his banished one. 14 For we must certainly die, and we are as the waters spilled to the ground which cannot be gathered.
God will not take a life but devises plans for a banished person not to be cast out from him.

By means of brute force, aided by financial means.
A sequence of three transitive verbs (a transitive verb uses a direct object, in this case the object is Tamar).
Some translations totally omit the verb and change the phrase into something like “because he was stronger than her, then he raped her.” Well, yes, he was stronger than her, but what the original narrative is not just describing the strength of Amnon but it is describing how he performed this action, effectively overpowering her, nullifying her resistance.

15 Then Amnon hated her very deeply, for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her.
He obviously never “loved” Tamar; he only had a lustful passion towards her. This is a great example of how we need always to understand the context first, before we may attempt to understand the language employed. It is true that the Hebrew says “love” but we clearly see it was not real love what Amnon experienced towards Tamar.

Amnon does not use a personal pronoun, “her,” but instead refers to Tamar as an object, with an “it.” The only other place I can find with this same usage (referring to a woman as an “it”) is when Eve is presented to Adam the first time, Gen. 2:23, which is kind of understandable. :)

Amnon choice of words reflect even more his disdain towards Tamar.
In his language, Tamar from a person became literally an object.
CSB is the only Bible translation I could find that preserves this linguistic feature.

In my last sermon I mentioned how Nathan chose to remain with his father king Saul until the very end, and they both died together in battle.
In this story, Absalom commits a crime and exiles himself, away from his father, King David.
Joab becomes instrumental to restore a relationship between King David and his child, who was away from him.
How would this look like if instead of King David we remember the story of the Gospel and we place there at the top God the Father…

Whether it was a self-imposed exile, as it was the case of Absalom, or whether we have been ostracized, isolated, or kicked out by society, family, friends, church, or whomever, due to our unacceptable behavior, the point of the matter is that because of the work of the middle-man, not Joab anymore, but Jesus, the ultimate intercessor, the best mediator ever between God and men (Hebrews 9), because of Jesus’ work on the cross, we have been reconciled
