3. How to Construct a Textual Sermon
The Textual sermon…
Draws its main divisions from the text.
Draws its sub-divisions from elsewhere
The subject is divided as the text indicates or permits by the scope of its material
Derives from the text only a skeleton which is filled in any way that the preacher desires or that the subject requires.

4. How to Construct a Textual Sermon
Method #1 – Analysis: i.e. taking apart
Separating the parts of the text so as to note and examine them separately.
The ideas, duties, arguments, classifications, conditions, doctrines, questions, or admonitions of the text are simply taken in the order that they occur in the text.

5. How to Construct a Textual Sermon
Method #2 – Synthesis, i.e.: putting together
Has to do with rearrangement of points, or the constructions of an outline from the points supplied by a text, but arranged to suit the purpose of the sermon or the pattern of the sermon composition without thought of the order of the points of the text.
Many texts must of necessity be treated synthetically, because there is in them no ready order and arrangements of the points.
