European countires experiencing social and political upheaval Communism - public ownership spreading and seen as a threat to established power Strong military attitudes growing in popularity Leaders becoming dictators once in power

Britain - completely exhausted by the war. France – trying to maintain slipping power. Germany/Japan – conquered nations

France New president of France, de Gaulle, was determined to maintain France’s position as a major power. However, France had neither the resources nor the willpower to do so. Both France and Britain became known as Middle Powers.
