1 (Example of Kampong Cham)
Exercise 3 – Preparing the statistical data for creating a thematic map (Example of Kampong Cham) Sokna Sek – MOH/DPHI Leng Ing – MOH/DPHI Sat Chap – MOH/DPHI Steeve Ebener – HGLC Izay Pantanilla – HGLC

2 Request received for a map
Purpose: Guide the planning of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) services in the Province of Kampong Cham Audience: EmONC Province officer Content: Location of EmoNC services on top of the commune level predicted number of pregnant women for the most recent year Medium: A4 size map stored in a pdf file

3 Request received for a map
Data that has been compiled for Kampong Cham: Health Facility master list (DPHI) List of EmONC facilities functional in 2016 and planned status (MOH) Administrative divisions master list down to the Commune level (NCDD) 2015 Commune level estimated number of pregnant women (WorldPop) Data placed in the TRAINING_MATERIAL\EXERCISES\EXERCISE_3\Data folder on your USB key

4 Administrative divisions master list
Exercise 3 – Part 1 Administrative divisions master list Open the file in excel (Admin_divisions_master_list_NCDD_Nov2016.xlsx) Look at the structure and content of the file How many worksheets? What is in each worksheet? Identify the following information across the worksheets: The source of the data The year of validity The explanation of the content Is this file organized properly to allow its use in a GIS software?

5 Commune level number of pregnant women for 2015
Exercise 3 – Part 1 Commune level number of pregnant women for 2015 Open the file in excel (Preg_Wom_Com_Kampong-Cham_2015.xlsx) Look at the structure and content of the file Search for the following information across the worksheet: The source of the data The year of validity The explanation of the content Is this file organized properly to allow its use in a GIS software? Does the list of Communes in this file match the list in the master list? Are the Communes codes the same between both files? Is the link possible between the two file?

6 Health facility master list
Exercise 3 – Part 2 Health facility master list Open the file in excel (HFML_Kampong-Cham_final.xlsx) Notice the same structure than for the administrative division master list Identity the following information across the worksheets: The source of the data The year of validity The structure of the unique identifier attached to each health facility The geographic coordinates for each health facility

7 Health facility master list
Exercise 3 – Part 2 Health facility master list Can you read the text in both English and Khmer in the file? What particular additional fields are observed here compared to the administrative division master list? Is this file organized properly to allow its use in a GIS software?

8 List of EmONC facilities in Kampong Cham Province
Exercise 3 – Part 2 List of EmONC facilities in Kampong Cham Province Open the file in excel (Start_EmONC_Kampong-Cham_2016.xlsx) Is the content of this file similar to those seen until now? If not, what is different/missing? Is this file organized properly to allow its use in a GIS software? If not, what needs to be done in order to get it ready for use in a GIS software?

9 Re-organizing the Health facility level data to allow its use in a GIS
Exercise 3 – Part 3 Re-organizing the Health facility level data to allow its use in a GIS Open the template file in excel (Template_EmONC_Kampong-Cham_2016.xlsx) Reorganize the content of the Start_EmONC_Kampong-Cham_2016.xlsx into the Template: One health facility per row One information per column Health facility unique identifier, name and other fields in white from the health facility master list EmONC status data from the Start_EmONC_Kampong-Cham_2016.xlsx Fill the Metadata

10 Exercise 3 - Conclusion Result of the matching exercise
Match obtained for all 10 facilities Difference observed in the name of the ODs between the list of EmONC and the health facility master list One of the two might not be up-to-date Sometime the match can not be obtained for all the facilities in the database This could result in loss of data in the final map

11 Exercise 3 - Conclusion Re-organizing statistical data that are not properly organized in the first place might be very time consuming and prone to errors Not using a master list as the reference for data collection and sharing (unique identified, name,…) can results in an important loss of data when trying to do the match Good geo-spatial data management practices is key to a powerful use of GIS and other geospatial technologies, and therefore thematic mapping
