We often use it to describe the background situation (what was happening) for a sudden event in the past (what happened). Past continuous: meaning • 2 The past continuous can describe several in progress at the same time. While Tom was cooking, David was phoning a friend. The airport was full of people. Time expressions • With the past continuous Use when or while with the past continuous to mean ‘during the time that’. Ex. While we were waiting, it started to rain. I cut my finger when I was peeling the potatoes. G I T A L 4.0
