Often we stereotype people, that is we look at them and think we know what they are like before we’ve met or even spoken to them. We can be completely wrong. Let’s list some situations where we might stereotype someone and why.

Consider the similarities between a book cover and our public self. (What does “our public self” mean?) A book cover may give only one impression of what is inside it but we have some control over the messages we give about us. How?

Afterwards you are going work in groups to investigate stereotyping.
We are going to read a story about stereotyping. It is called “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Afterwards you are going work in groups to investigate stereotyping. When your investigation is complete you will need to use the “Working together self-review checklist” to see how well you co-operated.
