Long-Term Strategy (commitment of recurring dollars)
Hire a “cluster of faculty” into each of a small number of focus areas Budget projection Define focus areas Advertise Establish interdisciplinary search committees to carry out multi-year hiring process 5/12/20195/12/2019 State of the CAPITAL
5
A Specific Budget Plan Invest 75% of recurring dollars ($9.113M x 0.75 = $6.83M) in personnel; remainder for operational support 5/12/20195/12/2019 State of the CAPITAL
6
A Specific Budget Plan Invest 75% of recurring dollars ($9.113M x 0.75 = $6.83M) in personnel; remainder for operational support Assume each “cluster” has the following makeup ($998.4K): 6 $100K (9-month, base salary) 2 technical support $60K (12-month, base salary) 6 graduate $20K 22% fringe benefits on faculty & staff 5/12/20195/12/2019 State of the CAPITAL

If average base salary is larger, number of required support staff is larger, or dollars reserved for operational support is larger, of course, in the end we’ll hire fewer faculty If existing units share the costs of new hires, then more hires can be made 5/12/20195/12/2019 State of the CAPITAL

Define Focus Areas In September, 2001, we solicited ideas from across the campus [ In November, 2001, we sought the advice of an external advisory panel [ Michael Crow (Columbia University) Jack Dongarra (University of Tennessee) Richard Gibbs (Baylor College of Medicine) John Hopcroft (Cornell University) James Mitchell (Lucent Technologies) 5/12/20195/12/2019 State of the CAPITAL
