1 Unit – 6 voltage regulators

2 VOLTAGE MULTIPLIERS Voltage multipliers are used to step up the output voltage level to two or more times the peak voltage of input. The various voltage multiplier circuits are: Voltage Doubler Voltage Tripler Voltage Quadrapler

3 Voltage Doublers A voltage doubler provides an output that is twice its peak input voltage. Half wave Voltage Doubler Full wave voltage Doubler

4 Half wave Voltage Doubler

5 Operation During Positive Half cycle of input: D1 forward biased
D2 reverse biased Capacitor C1 will charged to Vm

6 Operation During negative half cycle of input: D1 reverse biased
D2 forward biased Capacitor C2 gets charged. Voltage across C1 remain as Vm.

8 FULL WAVE VOLTAGE DOUBLER

9 CONTD…….. During positive half cycle: D1 forward biased.
Capacitor C1 charges to Vm

10 Contd…. During negative half cycle: D2 forward biased.
Capacitor C2 charges to Vm

11 Contd…..

12 Voltage Tripler

13 Operation During first positive cycle: D1 forward biased.
D2, D3 reverse biased. C1 charges to Vm

14 Contd….. During next negative half cycle: D2 forward biased.
C1 will holds entire charge and voltage remains as Vm. C2 charges to 2Vm

15 Contd…

16 Contd….. In next positive half cycle: C2 retains voltage 2Vm
D3 is forward biased. D1, D2 reverse biased. C3 charges to 2Vm.

17 Contd….

18 Voltage Quadrupler
