Theatre Arts 120 The Theatre Family
2
Humble beginnings… Acting, more than likely, had its beginnings in the days of cavemen. Scholars believe that kills were re-enacted for the tribe by hunters in the light of campfires.
3
Rambling Men In Medieval times, troupes of actors traveled from town to town presenting their plays on wagons converted into stages. They lived as families, but women did not take the stage.
5
The times they were a changin’
Once women gained the right to act (not until after Shakespeare’s time!), husbands, wives, and children acted together. Even today, movie stars often marry other movie stars. Sometimes they bring their children to the set.
6
We are family…literally
7
It’s a family thing Even when they are not related, actors spend a lot of time together.
8
Actors share emotions and act out situations that are generally reserved for their closest friends and family. Imagine how difficult it would be to act like you’re in love if you hardly know the other actor! Same thing goes for hatred.
9
“True” Romance?
10
Lean on me… Cast members must learn to get along because they rely on each other for cues, proper stage combat methods, and help with preparation. This is most effective when the cast knows and likes one another. When you do scenes in class, you and your partner(s) are a cast, so this also applies to you.
11
We’re All In This Together!
12
Acting is very personal, and a great deal of teamwork, trust, and support are needed.
Many students fear criticism and failure, so a mutually supportive atmosphere is key in Theatre Arts class! Be friendly!
13
…but not too friendly.
