1. Free Evening Talk: Alchemy, or How to Make Gold
Speaker: Dr John Hudson, Chair, Royal Society of Chemistry Historical Group. Description: This talk takes a light-hearted look at the long history of alchemy. It discusses the various phases of alchemy - in Alexandria, the Islamic world, and in Europe. It describes what the alchemists were trying to achieve (not just the production of gold), and how they went about their quest. The talk considers whether or not the modern chemist is in any sense indebted to the work of the alchemists.
