3 Marketing "...an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering valuable information to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders."

4 Printing is BIG Business
In 2006 there are approximately 30,700 printing companies in the United States, accounting for $112 billion, according to the 2006 U.S. Industry & Market Outlook by Barnes Reports. Print jobs that move through the Internet made up 12.5% of the total U.S. Printing market last year, according to research firm InfoTrend/CAP Ventures.

5 Clearly, Printing Is VITAL…
But how does that matter to RIT Senior design???

6 What Can Image Quality Do?
Captivating The Customer Base Getting Your Point Across Successful Implementation/Utilization of Products Natural Human Nature To Remember Influential Images

7 But What is Image Quality???

8 Gloss = Image Quality

9 Measuring Gloss In Industry
Gloss is measured in all industries where color and appearance are critical Paint Plastics Ceramics Paper Textiles Coating Industries All measure gloss each and every day.

10 Why Gloss? A printer in the commercial printing or packaging market must read gloss because it has a profound impact on the appearance of a printed product. Your colors can be perfect Ink densities can be exact The stock and ink can be the same However, if the gloss level is inconsistent the appearance will be drastically effected.

11 Why Goniophotometry? An initial look has been taken at the correlation between the appearance of gloss and gloss measurement for samples of colors other than black. Early results indicate that there are factors in the u-goniophotometer feature vector that correlate better with perception than measurements from a traditional glossmeter Message: Glossmeters do not provide an adequate measure of perceived gloss

13 How it works ● Manually load sample onto cylindrical roller ● Set camera polarizer to initial angular position ● Set light intensity on fiber optic illumination source ● Collimated (in one axis) linearly polarized white light illuminates sample. ● Specific desired rays reflect from sample at a 20 angle relative to illumination light ● Portion of sample is imaged by telecentric imaging system ● USB camera snaps first picture (pol. parallel) ● Set camera polarizer to final angular position and snap another picture (pol. perpendicular) 1 3 2 4 5 6 7 8

14 So What Does This Project Do?
This project will focus on implementing the technology of goniophotometry into a GLOSS measuring system that is….. Easy To Use Better Than The Current Products In The Market Able To Measure The Angular Distribution of a Product’s Gloss Characteristics

15 This Project Integrates…
