4 Why did the French begin moving in on Africa? (Step 1)
They were competing with the Ottoman Turks for trade routes to increase their economy The French were in debt to the Prussians and the Prussians wanted their money They were still trying to recover from a depression started by the overthrow of King Louis XVI, tyranny by Maximilian Pontesbierre, and the craziness brought by Napoleon

5 The English were creating their own empire…why not the French?
All of the imperialization came from nationalism Nationalism – your culture/country is better than everyone else's.

6 Step 2, Location Activity
On the next slide, locate France and outline the political border of France on your own map. Shade France the color of your choice. Hang onto that map pencil because you will need it again later.

8 Algeria What began as a prosperous relationship turned sour
The French tried trading with Algerians but wouldn’t pay for Algeria’s wheat products. Algeria quit “giving” the French supplies Created the Fly Whisk Incident Ultimately caused the French to invade Algeria

9 Algeria On the next slide locate Algeria and outline its political border On the second map, locate where wheat is grown, create a symbol in your key, and put that symbol on your map where wheat is grown in Algeria

12 Morocco Morocco was considered a protectorate of France
When the French moved in (1912), they forced assimilation on the Moroccans. Moroccans did not gain their independence from France until 1954. Morocco was primarily used as a trading route because of its proximity to Spain. The Strait of Gibraltar

13 Morocco Locate Morocco on the next slide and outline the political border around it. After you have done the previous step, look at the following slide and locate the Strait of Gibraltar and label that (you don’t have to make a key symbol for this).

16 Ivory Coast Area colonized by the French
Called Ivory Coast for elephant tusks Also imported coffee, cocoa, and palm oil On the next slide, locate what used to be called Ivory Coast and outline its political border On the following slide, create a symbol for coffee and palm oil and draw those symbols where they belong in Ivory Coast

19 Indochina The French also expanded their nation into Southeast Asia into a territory called Indochina Present day countries of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia They imperialized this area for the following: Closeness to China, another port to grow their economy, and peppers/spices

Outline the political borders of Indochina On the slide after that locate where they grew peppers and spices, create a symbol, put it in your key and identify where those areas are on your map

23 Writing Prompt, Step 3 How does France’s Imperialism compare to England’s Imperialism? Do you feel they are more alike or different? After 3 days of looking over imperialism, how do you feel about it? Do you think it can truly help people or does it create devastation?
