In your writer’s notebooks, complete the mentor sentence activity on the next slide. We can review these quickly Friday. 2. Pick up a copy of “Father” off of the front table and complete, in your groups, the questions on the 3rd slide about this passage. 3. Finally, pick up a copy of the handout for sentence stems and verbs for oreo-cookie quoting off of the front table. Follow the instructions for working on your essays on the last slide.

3. “Father”
Look through this chapter as a group. Discuss what you notice about how Gary Soto tells his story. Work through several possible what/how/why moments. Then, choose one that you think is your best. Write it down and save it to share tomorrow. What – what is happening or being described How – the strategies that the author uses (diction, syntax, imagery, figurative language, etc.) Why – why the author uses the strategies he did for that moment

4. Working on Your Essay
Ask yourself, “What needs to be true in order for my thesis to be true?” These are probably the main sub-claims for your paper. You will need to provide evidence to support each of these sub-claims.
What kind of evidence do you have? Either after you have written or after you have outlined, go back and see that you have both enough convincing evidence for each claim but also that you use evidence for multiple purposes. Do you use evidence to authorize, illustrate, extend, and/or counter? You don’t need all of them, but you should have at least a couple of different types of evidence throughout your paper.
Look at our evidence stems. Can you or do you use the oreo-cookie approach to introduce and comment on evidence? Would any of the stems help you?
If you are really stuck trying to figure out what you’re writing about: Ask yourself this question:
*What important messages/ideas about life/humanity/history do I see in Things Fall Apart? How does the book convey those messages?
