2 Agenda Bell ringer Notes on using multiple sources
Practice using multiple sources with the argument essay Practice multiple choice Group work time

3 Vocab Bell Ringer Do today’s vocab word

4 Style Bell Ringer Choose a sentence variation model to rewrite this sentence (try to use a model you haven’t used before): Write your own sentence using variation model #25 (asyndeton): “Bombardment, barrage, curtain-fire, mines, gas, tanks, machine guns, hand-grenades—words, words, words, but they hold the horror of the world.” "I don't even butter my bread; I consider that cooking."

5 Rhetorical Mode of the Day: Exemplification
Writing an exemplification essay involves offering many examples to support a generalization about something. (This is pretty much every essay you’ve written in high school). Generalization: Climate change is bad for the environment Example: Mass extinctions Example: Increased extreme weather Example: Changing migratory patterns of animals

6 Notes on Using Multiple Sources in the Argument Essay
The argument essay will be the only essay where you are not given reading material. You must pull from your own outside knowledge to support your claims with examples (use exemplification!)

7 Notes on Using Multiple Sources in the Argument Essay
We gave you a list of categories to help you in your evidence-brainstorming process BUT We want to avoid THIS in our argument thesis: The importance of ownership can be seen through history, personal experience, and current events. If you use those categories to organize your essay, you’ll end up with a formulaic and poorly synthesized argument.

8 Notes on Using Multiple Sources in the Argument Essay
What to do instead of using the categories to organize your essay: Use REASONS/IDEAS: Sarte’s view that ownership extends beyond the tangible is valid. Furthermore, this sense of ownership of the non-tangible is essential to the development of one’s sense of self because it encourages goal-setting, promotes creativity, and helps people find a place in their community.

Sarte’s view that ownership extends beyond the tangible is valid. Furthermore, this sense of ownership of the non-tangible is essential to the development of one’s sense of self because it encourages goal-setting, promotes creativity, and helps people find a place in their community. When you have a thesis like this, you can plan to use MULTIPLE sources of information to support each of your main reasons.

…this sense of ownership of the non-tangible is essential to the development of one’s sense of self because it encourages goal-setting, promotes creativity, and helps people find a place in their community. 1) Psychology studies on motivation showing when people are intrinsically motivated (almost like feeling a personal sense of ownership of the motivation), they are more likely to follow-through with a goal. 2) Personal experience: when I felt ownership of the material in my Chemistry class because I knew I wanted to go to Med. School, I worked harder and set more lofty goals.

11 Notes on Using Multiple Sources in the Argument Essay
1) Psychology studies on motivation showing when people are intrinsically motivated (almost like feeling a personal sense of ownership of the motivation), they are more likely to follow-through with a goal. 2) Personal experience: when I felt ownership of the material in my Chemistry class because I knew I wanted to go to Med. School, I worked harder and set more lofty goals. This paragraph will sound more convincing because it is synthesizing multiple sources to support a main reason rather than relying on one source to support the big, primary claim.

12 Practice using multiple sources in an argument essay:
Look at the argument prompt and use your argument planning tools to develop a thesis guided by main reasons rather than by the categories. Then, brainstorm how you would use at least TWO DIFFERENT sources to support each of the main reasons.

13 Practice MC Complete the practice multiple choice.
Don’t forget to preview your questions FIRST to guide your reading. You have 10 minutes.

14 Group Work Time Remember upcoming deadlines.
Everyone in your group should be contributing.

15 Homework: Write the argument essay from our practice today!
