FLIPPED CLASSROOM PRESENTED BY Dr.R.JEYANTHI Asst.Professor,
Dept.of Education, Gandhigram.
3
What is Teaching? The best approach to understanding the nature of teaching is establishing a harmonious relationship between teacher, student and subject. Teaching is the activity of facilitating learning. Effectiveness in teaching does not relate to teacher’s age, sex, and teaching experience. 3
4
What is learning &How learning happens?
Learning – Knowledge acquired by study. Learning happens and knowledge is generated. There is a famous saying: I hear… I forget; I see … I remember; I do … I understand.
5
How learning happens? ….:
We remember .. 20% of what we hear; 30% of what we see; 50% of what we see and hear; 90% of what we see, hear & do.

Changes in Teacher Role
A shift from: 1. Knowledge transmitter, primary source of information, content expert, and source of all answers. 2. Teacher controls and directs all aspects of learning A shift to: 1. Learning facilitator, collaborator, coach, mentor, knowledge navigator, and co-learner. 2. Teacher gives students more options and responsibilities for their own learning

FLIPPED CLASSROOM The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions. A growing number of higher education individual faculty have begun using the flipped model in their courses.
8
FLIPPED CLASSROOM Flipped classrooms are shifting the way teachers provide instructions by inverting traditional teaching methods to engage students in the learning process. Using technology, lectures are moved out of the classroom and delivered online as a means to free up class time for interaction and collaboration. In order to effectively implement a flipped classroom, teachers must possess a set of requisite technical skills, conceptual knowledge and pedagogical expertise.
9
MEANING Flipped classroom is a form of blended learning in which students learn content online by watching video lectures, usually at home, and homework is done in class with teachers and students discussing and solving questions. Teacher interaction with students is more personalised - guidance instead of lecturing. This is also known as backward classroom, inverted classroom, reverse teaching, and the Thayer method.
10
What does it mean to “Flip?”
What is typically presented in class (i.e. lectures, content, background knowledge, or real life experiences) by a live teacher, students receive at home via a podcast, YouTube video, and/or other online resources.
11
What does it mean to “Flip?”
What is typically given as homework is done in class with the assistance of the teacher.
12
TRADITIONAL (Vs) FLIPPED CLASSROOM
13
Move lecture material out of the classroom through online delivery.
Extend conversation outside of class through threaded discussion. Move “homework” into the classroom where the instructor can serve as “guide.” Use opened up time for discussion and practice.
14
DEFINITION OF FLIPPED LEARNING
Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creativity in the subject matter.
15
FOUR PILLARS
16
HOW DOES IT WORK? There is no single model for the flipped classroom—the term is widely used to describe almost any class structure that provides prerecorded lectures followed by in-class exercises.
17
ELEMENTS OF A FLIPPED CLASSROOM
Classroom Flip Uses Provides opportunity for Educational Technology Learning Through Activity Influences Influences Learning Environment
18
IMPLEMENTING A FLIPPED CLASSROOM
Instructional module was developed to provide information to prospective teachers interested in implementing a flipped classroom. The module was effective in delivering an overview of the required material, but could have benefitted from the inclusion of added examples of working implementations to raise the confidence level of the participants. Added support through a learning community, either in-person or online, would help to provide guidance through initiation and expand on the shared experiences of the individuals.
19
Why is it significant? Devoting class time to application of concepts might give instructors a better opportunity to detect errors in thinking, particularly those that are widespread in a class. At the same time, collaborative projects can encourage social interaction among students, making it easier for them to learn from one another and for those of varying skill levels to support their peers.
20
Where is it going? As the flipped class becomes more popular, new tools may emerge to support the out-of-class portion of the curriculum. In particular, the ongoing development of powerful mobile devices will put a wider range of rich, educational resources into the hands of students, at times and places that are most convenient for them.
21
What are the implications for teaching and learning?
The flipped classroom constitutes a role change for instructors, who give up their front-of-the-class position in favor of a more collaborative and cooperative contribution to the teaching process.
