Effect of epidermal hydration on systemic cytokine levels in mice. Disruption of epidermal barrier function during aging induces cytokine production in mouse skin and subsequently elevates serum cytokine levels. Restoring barrier function in the skin through daily rehydration of the epidermis lowers circulating cytokine levels in aged mice.
