1 Classification and Separation
Matter Classification and Separation

2 Classification of Matter
Heterogeneous Homogeneous

3 Definitions Homogeneous- Uniform throughout. Matter will have the same composition anywhere in the container. Examples include gold, air, water kool-aide Heterogeneous-a form of matter that has variable consistency. Composition changes throughout the sample. Examples include Italian salad dressing, concrete

4 Classification of MAtter
Homogeneous Solutions Pure Substances

5 Definitions Solutions- Two or more types of matter uniformly combined, but not bonded. Examples include salt water and kool aide. Pure Substances- This type of matter has only one type of small particle making up its composition. These include elements that are made of atoms and compounds that are made of molecules. Compounds- Two or more elements chemically combined. This type of matter has a chemical bond. Examples include water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Chemical compounds ALWAYS have a chemical formula where the elements are combined in the same proportion. Elements- Samples of matter made of only one type of atom. Examples include any entry on the Periodic Table.

6 Classification of MAtter
Heterogeneous Mixture

7 Definitions Mixture- Type of matter made of two or more materials randomly mixed. This is a synonym for heterogeneous.

8 Separation of Matter Types of matter that can be PHYSICALLY separated include -mixtures -solutions

9 Physical separation techniques
Types of Physical separation: (matter separated based on differences in physical properties) -distillation (boiling point) -fractional crystallization (solubilities at different temperatures) -magnetic separation (magnetism) -filtration (based on particle size) -decantation (separation of 2 immisible liquids with different density) -chromatography (different abilities to move through a medium)

10 Separation techniques
Types of matter that can be separated CHEMICALLY -Compounds *ELEMENTS CANNOT BE SEPARATED!!!

11 Types of Chemical Separation-
-Electrolysis -Decomposition -and MANY more we will learn this year!
