1 Linear word problems Two step

2 Let the number be x. The statement now becomes
Example1 :- A number divided by 4 and increased by 6 gives 10. Find the number. Solution: Let the number be x. The statement now becomes Lets now rewrite statement as follows A number x divided by 4 and increased by 6 gives 10 Lets us now write algebraic expression for the above statement and then solve it Transposing + 6 from L.H.S to R.H.S x = 4 x 4 = 16 Ans:- The number is 16 Transposing ÷ 4 from L.H.S to R.H.S

3 Example2 :- If 7 is subtracted from 5 times a number, the result is 63
Example2 :- If 7 is subtracted from 5 times a number, the result is 63. Find the number Solution: Let the number be x. The statement now becomes Lets now rewrite statement as follows If 7 is subtracted from 5 times a number x, the result is 63. Find the number Lets us now write algebraic expression for the above statement and then solve it 5x – 7 = 63 5x = Transposing - 7 from L.H.S to R.H.S 5x = 70 x = 70 ÷ 5 Transposing x 5 from L.H.S to R.H.S x =14 Ans:- The number is 14

4 Try these If 40 is subtracted from a number, the result is 25. Find the number. 5 times a number decreased by 3 gives 28. Find the number.
