Lesson: 12 – 2 Surface Areas of Prisms & Cylinders
Applied Geometry Lesson: 12 – 2 Surface Areas of Prisms & Cylinders Objective: Learn to find the lateral areas and surface areas of prisms and cylinders.
3
Lateral Area (of a solid) – the sum of all the areas of the lateral sides
Surface Area (of a solid) – the sum of the areas of all it surfaces. Volume (of a solid) - measures the space contained within a solid.
4
Abbreviations h – height P – Perimeter of base B – Area of base
d – diameter r – radius l - Slant Height
5
Activity Use geometric shapes to find formulas. Prisms
Lateral Area L = Ph Surface Area S = Ph + 2B Volume V = Bh Pyramids Lateral Area L = ½ P l Surface Area S = ½ P l + B Volume V = (1/3)Bh
6
Cylinders Lateral Area Surface Area Volume Cone Sphere
7
Activity Net - a two-dimensional pattern that folds to form a solid.
8
Find the lateral area and the surface area of the rectangular prism.
9
Find the lateral area and surface area of the triangular prism.
Find c first.
10
Find the lateral area and surface area of the cylinder to the nearest hundredth.
