AIM: HOW DID THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR SOCIALLY & ECONOMICALLY IMPACT WESTERN EUROPEAN SOCIETY? MOTIVATION/JOURNAL ENTRY Is violence/war ever justified? Can humans move beyond wars as a way to resolve conflict? What historical evidence do we have to support/refute this?

2 I. HUNDRED YEARS WAR: { } A : Last French king in the Capetian line dies. B. English king Edward III claimed the right to rule all of France. C. 1338:War broke out over French throne. D. English used cannons, to help win battles. E. Although the English managed to control majority of France, the French proved to be victorious in the end.

4 In 1429, a 17-year-old peasant girl asked to see the French king
In 1429, a 17-year-old peasant girl asked to see the French king. Her name was Joan of Arc. Joan claimed that voices from heaven had spoken to her. They had ordered her to save France. She convinced the king of the truth of her story. He put her at the head of an army.

5 II. JOAN OF ARC a. 1420's: Young female, Joan of Arc, inspired France. b. J.O.A convinced French army that God was on their side.

6 c. 1431: English captured Joan and burned her alive.
d. French continued to win the war. e England gave up claim to rule France, and France was again ruled by a French king.

8 III. IMPACT OF THE HUNDRED YEARS
A. 1453: WAR ENDED INTRODUCING MAJOR CHANGES.: 1. Nationalism emerged in England and France. 2. People perceived monarch as a national leader, and his power and prestige increased.
