Identify the city in which the photos were taken.
mosaic.lk.net Religion has dramatically altered Earth’s geography. The photographs above are of the same place with different scales and demonstrate the impact of religion on geography. Identify the city in which the photos were taken. The photo on the left contains two historic landmarks for different religions. Identify the two religions and discuss how one religion is a universalizing religion while the other is an ethnic religion. Explain how religion has altered the geography of the country where the photographs were taken. Identify and explain an example from the 21st century of how religion can be a centripetal force.

Scoring Rubric: 9 points total
1 point: Jerusalem, Israel 4 points: Islam, Judaism; Judaism is ethnic because it is highly concentrated around one ethnicity/ethnic group; Islam is universalizing because it appeals to a variety of people in a variety of locations and actively seeks out new members 2 points: adequate explanation of the following (1 for weak explanation: creation of Israel, Israel v. Palestine territorial conflicts/separation of religious groups (Palestinian territories, Gaza Strip/West Bank/Golan Heights, etc.); Jerusalem’s Old City’s Four Quarters, restriction of movements for Palestinians, landmarks with religious significance in Israel (Al-Aqsa mosque, Western Wall, etc.) 2 points: 1 point for identification, 1 point for explanation of: chain migration; new Pope elected; religious-based charitable organizations; post disaster (Haiti, Boxing Day tsunami, church shooting/bombing, etc.); creation of South Sudan (Christians and animists targeted during decades long civil war/genocide)
