The Plates and it’s wonders
Basic Geo II The Plates and it’s wonders
2
Plate Tectonic Movement
Three types of Plate movements Convergent – Landmasses converge forming mass mountain regions This has formed the Himalayas when around 55 Million years ago India crashed into Asia. Subduction – is another form of Convergent and this occurs when ocean plates dive under land masses. This creates volcanic eruptions, as we have seen in the Andes of South America
3
Divergent Plates Divergent Boundaries – This occurs when Magma rises from the Earth’s mantle and pushes apart two or more plates Volcanoes and Mountains rise along its seams This process is important because it renews the ocean floor, it also creates and widens basins which connect the oceans On land this causes things like the Great Rift Valley and will eventually pull apart Africa into two landmasses, a mid ocean ridge would then mark the boundary between the two plates
4
Transform Boundaries Transform Boundaries – Two plates grind past each other along a strike-slip faults San Andreas Fault is the prime example here They do not produce spectacular mountain ranges, but they do trigger massive earthquakes the one in 1906, and 1989 It’s important to note here that they do not have a tear or crunching motion, they simply slide past one another
