Guiding Theories of Student Success at Capital University
Erikson: Psychosocial Development Theory When dealing with a crisis or turning point, new skills are developed. Sanford: Challenge and Support Theory There must be a balance of challenge and support for students to develop. Chickering: Seven Vectors of Identity Development The stage of development of the student (competence, emotions, interdependence, relationships, identity, purpose, integrity) must be considered.

The Snow Globe Factor Imagine a snow globe. Envision your student’s college campus inside the dome. Now imagine taking that snow globe and shaking it up. The frenzy that results inside represents everyone scrambling to find friends, to find their classes, and just to find their place on campus. This is what the first few weeks (or months, for some) of college life are all about.
