1 Fodder – Anne Miek Kremer
Task Force on GNB 14 & 15 Nov 2011 Fodder – Anne Miek Kremer

2 Data needs Grassland cover 40% of UAA, main input for ruminants
Balances: Land and Soil budget: Fodder output Farm budget: Imported animal feed Fodder consumption Estimation of excretion coefficients using animal input/output balances Economy Wide Material Flow Accounts Regionalisation/differentiation: Fertiliser input, grazing etc

3 Estimation of harvested and grazed biomass
Supply-side approach: crop production statistics, Economic Accounts of Agriculture, area * yield assumptions etc Demand-side approach: animal feed requirements and animal input/output balances Cross checking supply-side approach and demand-side approach Control measures: N in animal feed = N in animal product/NUE N in home-produced animal feed = N in animal feed – N in imported animal feed.

4 Proposal: TF Grassland end 2012
Guidelines/methodology Pilot projects AEI Guidelines EW-MFA Variable, yearly update Implementation: Grants 2012/2013

5 Discussion points - Fodder
How can imported animal feed be estimated at NUTS0 level? Do we need to take into account trade of animal feed between regions? Do current land use statistics sufficiently identify different grassland systems (intensity, grazing/mowing)? Are data on fodder production (excl grassland) sufficiently available at national and regional level? Do you agree with the need to cross check supply/demand approaches to estimate fodder and the suggested control measures? Do you agree that grassland production should be estimated annual (no constant per ha rate) to reflect changes in management? Do you agree with the proposed actions?
