1 Sustainability in Dorm Rooms
By: Joel Newburg

2 SUNY Fredonia’s sustainability
Each room is provided with a “Go Green” recycling basket. Recycling rooms are conveniently located between suites. Each student is given a fluorescent light bulb in their main light. Fredonia saves $7.00 per lamp using fluorescent bulbs. They provide students with a “tips for students” to tell them how to save energy, gas, and to recycle.

3 Other Ways We Can Help Fredonia
Make recycling more effective: instead of one big recycling bin for everything they should have separate bins for every kind of recyclable. Recycle Bags from C- Store Most kids have piles of the bags in their rooms. Bags should be able to be re- used back at the store instead of wasting more and more each week.

4 Ways students Can Help Try to keep printing to a minimum and use
double sided printing option when available Power down your computer and other appliances when leave your room for a long period of time Take only the food you plan to eat in the dinning halls, don’t waste. Take shorter showers and turn of the faucet while brushing your teeth

5 Schools around the World
California's Pitzer College Changed their dorms to eco-dorms. They have roof top gardens, solar panels, and low flowing showers and toilets. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the national standard for sustainable buildings created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Pitzer was awarded the gold certification.

6 Schools around the World
EARTH University in Guacimo, Costa Rica Recently installed a digester that collects water from the cafeteria, dorms, and academic buildings to produce biogas. The biogas fuels most of the burners in the cafeteria, saving petroleum gas.

7 Schools around the World
University of South Carolina They live in green buildings, which are designed to filter fresh outside air into the buildings. This has a noticeable difference in health.

8 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
Green Building Rating System Positive results for the environment, health and financial return. They are a leading-edge system for designing, constructing, operating and certifying the world’s greenest buildings. Used by University of South Carolina

9 LEED Projects in Dorms around the U.S.

10 Solar and Wind Energy Project (SWEP)
Assess the wind and energy resources at the school Look to install wind towers if it would be cost effective Assess the solar energy on campus Look to install solar hot water heaters **Fredonia has lots of wind energy, so a good way to be more stainable on campus would be to get involved in SWEP.
