Left: in the bacterial cytoplasm, lipoyl-E2-PDH (red) works with the E1 and E3 subunits to form the pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) multi-enzyme complex, which links glycolysis to the citric acid cycle by catalyzing the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA. Right: Grayczyk et al. (2017) discovered that S. aureus secretes lipoyl-E2-PDH where it moonlights outside to block activation of TLR1/2 on macrophages, suppressing the innate immune response to S. aureus infections.
