1 Vocabulary Unit 7

2 amiss (a miss) Definition – (adj) faulty, not as it should be; (adv) in a mistaken way, wrongly We knew something was amiss when we arrived home and our front door was wide open.

3 brawl Definition- (n) a noisy quarrel or fight; (v) to quarrel or fight noisily The boys began to brawl over something that happened at school.

4 detest (de test) Definition – (v) to hate, dislike very much
Many people detest brussel sprouts.

5 domestic (do mes tic) Definition –(adj) native to a country, relating to the life or affairs of a household; (n) a household servant Both cats and dogs are common domestic pets.

6 flagrant (fla grant) Definition – (adj) extremely bad
The basketball player committed a flagrant foul.

7 flaw Definition – (n) a slight defect, crack
There is a slight flaw in our new table.

8 fledgling (fledg ling)
Definition –(n) an inexperienced person, beginner; a young bird about to leave the nest; (adj) inexperienced This past summer I saw a fledgling dove about to leave his nest for the first time.

9 fluster (flus ter) Definition – (v) to make or become confused, or nervous; (n) a state of confusion She did not fluster when she forgot a few lines to the song.

10 foremost (fore most) Definition – (adj) chief, most important; (adv) in the first place Your education should be first and foremost.

11 momentum ( mo men tum) Definition – (n) the force or speed with which something moves The skier gained momentum as he went down hill.

12 notable (no ta ble) Definition – (adj) striking, remarkable; (n) a person who is well-known, or outstanding in some way Award winners are notable books.

13 nurture (nur ture) Definition- (v) to bring up, care for, train, nourish; (n) training, upbringing The gorilla nurtures her baby.

14 paradox (par a dox) Definition –(n) a self-contradictory statement that on closer examination proves true; a person or thing with seemingly contradictory qualities A paradox is a situation where something seems both true and false. They have ears, but do not hear.

15 perjury (per ju ry) Definition – (n) the act of swearing to a lie
He committed perjury when he testified that he wouldn’t hurt a fly, yet the police found several dead flies in his apartment.

16 presume (pre sume) Definition – (v) to take for granted or suppose; to dare Nemo, I presume.

17 prior (pri or) Definition – (adj) earlier, former
Prior to the fall of 2007 Summit Hill Junior High was located on Rosewood Drive.

18 proficient (pro fic ient)
Definition –(adj) skilled, expert, or capable in any activity After much practicing, the player became proficient at darts.

19 salvo (sal vo) Definition – (n) a burst of gunfire or cannon shot, often as a tribute or salute; a sudden burst of anything The salvo from the airplane was breathtaking.

20 vigilant (vig i lant) Definition – (adj) wide-awake, alert, watchful
The vigilant eagle sits perched high in the tree.

21 wrath Definition – (n) intense anger
Sherry turned the doorknob and peeked into the room, risking the wrath of the teacher who had no patience for students who were late to class.
