Branches of Science

Earth Science Any of several sciences, such as geology, oceanography, and meteorology, that study the origin, composition, and physical features of the Earth. It is the study of the earth: rocks, soils, oceans, atmosphere, and surface features (weather and climate)

Space Science Any of several scientific disciplines, such as exobiology, that study phenomena occurring in the upper atmosphere, in space, or on celestial bodies other than Earth.

Physical Science Any of several branches of science, such as physics, chemistry, and astronomy, that study the nature and properties of energy and nonliving matter.

Life Science Any of several branches of science, such as biology, medicine, anthropology, or ecology, that deal with living organisms and their organization, life processes, and relationships to each other and their environment.

1. Chemistry The study of the composition, properties, and reactions of matter, particularly at the level of atoms and molecules. A science that deals with the structure and properties of substances and with the changes that they go through.

2. Astronomy The scientific study of the universe and the objects in it, including stars, planets, nebulae, and galaxies. Astronomy deals with the position, size, motion, composition, energy, and evolution of celestial objects.

3. Botany The scientific study of plants, including their physiology, structure, genetics, ecology, distribution, classification, and economic importance.

4. Physics The branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of physics, distinguished from that of chemistry and biology, includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.

5. Genetics The study of heredity, or how the characteristics of living things are transmitted from one generation to the next. Every living thing contains the genetic material that makes up DNA molecules. This material is passed on when organisms reproduce. The basic unit of heredity is the gene.

6. Oceanography The scientific study of oceans, the life that inhabits them, and their physical characteristics, including the depth and extent of ocean waters, their movement and chemical makeup, and the topography and composition of the ocean floors

7. Paleontology The science of the forms of life existing in former geologic periods, as represented by their fossils.

8. Meterology The branch of science concerned with the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere including weather and climate, especially as a means of forecasting the weather.

9. Geology The science devoted to the study of the Earth, particularly the solid Earth and the rocks that compose it.

10. Zoology The scientific study of the behavior, structure, physiology, classification, and distribution of animals.

11. Medicine The science of diagnosing, treating, or preventing disease and other damage to the body or mind. The branch of this science encompassing treatment by drugs, diet, exercise, and other nonsurgical means.
