1 Some problems for review for the year end final
Advanced Physics May 2018

2 Define things Define Electric Field Lines. Define Equipotential lines.

3 3 charges shown below, each is Coulombs, and each side is 20. m
3 charges shown below, each is Coulombs, and each side is 20.m. What is E and V at 4th corner of square? Draw E field lines for this space. -1 -1 2

4 Left charge is 3C, right is -1C, separated by 1. 0m
Left charge is 3C, right is -1C, separated by 1.0m. Where is E = 0 and V = 0? Plot E and V vs distance for this space. -1 3

5 The data below comes from two separate capacitors
The data below comes from two separate capacitors. What is C for each one? What is maximum q that can be stored on capacitor a? 2 4 6 1 3 Coulombs volts a b

6 Circuit problems Multiple R Multiple C Kirchhoff RC
Power transmission and power loss LC

7 electron I float an electron in a vacuum chamber with an E field.
What E is needed? Then I pass a large magnet over the electron at 5.0 m/s with B pointing down. What is net force on electron? What is its acceleration?

8 Loop and changing B I have a round loop of N=20 amd radius 0.3m and resistance of 4W hanging. I turn on a B field so that B = (0.5T)*t2 What is the emf at t = 5 s Plot the current in the loop with time. Will there be a torque on the loop?

9 solenoid Design a solenoid that can accelerate an electron from rest to 10,000m/s.

10 wires 2 long vertical and parallel wires are 1.0 m apart, each as 1.0A going up. What is the B field at a position 1/3 from one wire and 2/3 from the other, between them? What is the force between the two wires?

11 Applications to explain
Eddy brake Homopolar motor Mass Spec (the old fashioned kind) CRT Lightning

12 Exam guidance I will ask you to describe an example of some phenomenon that we performed in our classroom. It can either be a demo or a lab experiment. You should describe briefly the equipment used. Eg. A current causes a magnetic field. The thick wire hooked to a 12V battery deflects a compass.

13 MRI Describe the physics of MRI, starting with a proton and ending with a radio signal that tells us what the tissue environment of the proton is. Use sketches.
