1789-Constitution is ratified; Three-Fifths Compromise recognizes slavery as a legal institution. *Slave trade is to be abolished in 20 years *Southern states are considering abolition; plantation agriculture is proving unprofitable as tobacco and cotton wears out the land

Slavery Cont….. 1793-Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin, making short-staple cotton a profitable crop. 1808-The African slave trade is legally abolished; actually continues illegally up to the Civil War. American Colonization Society founded to “return” freed slaves to Africa (Liberia)

"like fireball in the night," wakes the country up to the problem of slavery. North wanted Edge in Representation South Wanted: New Land for more cotton Edge in Rep. New States Maine- Free State- North Missouri – Slave State Issue of slavery is settled for Louisiana Purchase Territory; 36*30’ line Outcome… = Rep in Senate 12 free 12 slave

A little bit more…. 1831-William Lloyd Garrison begins "The Liberator", an abolitionist newspaper. His first press is wrecked by an angry mob and he is almost lynched. (This happens in the North!) *Nat Turner's rebellion, killing 60 whites, terrorizes the South. *A proposal to end slavery in Virginia is dropped by the Virginia State Legislature
