1 to the Work of the Mathematics Teacher Leader
Applying Principles to Actions to the Work of the Mathematics Teacher Leader Dr. Pamela Bailey (O) (Fax)

2 How Many… …have read the book Principles to Actions (PtA)?
How have you used the ideas when working with teachers in your buildings?

3 Our Goal… …for this session is to brainstorm how to support teachers
In their transformation to a facilitator of knowledge and inquiry, Using the effective practice presented in PtAs, Creating parallel practices to share “What are the Coaches doing?”

4 Some Take Aways High-Leverage Practices (shared in PtA’s) have been determined for teachers in their work with students. High-Leverage Practices have NOT been determined for Math Teacher Leaders (MTL) in their work with teachers.

5 High Leverage Practices
The following slides are the practices as given in PtAs.

6 Effective Teaching and Learning
Establish Mathematics Goals to focus learning (PtA, p. 12). Implement Tasks that promote Reasoning & Problem Solving (PtA, p. 17). Cognitive Demand (Smith & Stein, 1998)

7 Effective Teaching and Learning
3. Use and connect Mathematical Representations (PtA, p. 25)

8 Effective Teaching and Learning
4. Facilitate meaning Mathematical Discourse (PtA, p. 29). 5. Pose purposeful Questions (PtA, p. 35). Funneling Focusing

9 Effective Teaching and Learning
6. Build Procedural Fluency from Conceptual Understanding (PtA, p. 42). 7. Support Productive Struggle in learning mathematics (PtA, p. 48). 8. Elicit and use Evidence of student thinking (PtA, p. 53).

10 What Do We, MTL’s, Do? SINCE these high-leverage practices, determined by research, are deemed effective THEN what do we do to support the teachers who are facilitating the instruction on a daily basis? MTL Math Teacher Leaders

11 PtA’s Research During school year , worked with a group of mathematics specialists to begin thinking about their practice and what would be considered high-leverage using the 8 practices given in PtAs.

12 Your Task In groups, you will be assigned one of the high-leverage practices. Receive a document of charts that state what the teachers and the students are doing from PtA. On the wall there is chart paper for each of the practices. Brainstorm what you believe you should be doing to support the teacher. Share out and have an informal discussion about each.

13 Data Collected At the Mathematics Specialist Conference
Ideas were gathered about what was perceived as effective practices, Shared ideas with each other so all might hear what is going on in other school divisions, Learned that we need to support and gather data to prove the worth of the MTLs in their work with teachers.

14 Ongoing Research My goal is to work with teams of mathematics teachers leaders (MTL) in school divisions around the state. Meet with a group once a month to discuss one of the practices in PtA’s MTLs are defined as those who work with teachers with regard to mathematics instruction. Collect data on what the MTLs believe are the effective high leverage practices.

15 Ongoing Research If your school system is interested in supporting MTLs and their work with teachers, contact Dr. Pam Bailey
