This is kind of weird, it is so different from what we’re use to!
Good Morning Students! From this moment on, you are no longer Ms. Polito’s fourth grade class from Holy Cross School. You are the students of the Deerfield Little Red Schoolhouse in the nineteenth century! This is kind of weird, it is so different from what we’re use to! How are we going to go back to the nineteenth century?
4
What does she mean we are no longer Ms. Polito’s fourth grade class…?
Hmmm… I wonder what we’re going to be doing today...
5
Back in the pioneer days, students from grades kindergarten through eighth would have attended their classes in this one-room schoolhouse.
6
The desks are so small and close together
The desks are so small and close together! I don’t think I could sit in a desk that uncomfortable all day! Our classroom at Holy Cross is always so neat and tidy. Wow, look how dirty the floors and chalkboards are!
7
Wow, I can’t believe how different all of my classmates look
Wow, I can’t believe how different all of my classmates look. Mary looks like a completely different person!
8
I expect students to be in their seats and ready to begin their work when the bell rings! What I see right now are students up and walking around the classroom! The lesson for today will be on poetry. Kyle, please read aloud to the class the first four lines of the poem in your book.
9
Sir, are you unable to complete the reading. This is unacceptable
Sir, are you unable to complete the reading? This is unacceptable. You are a fourth grade student; you most certainly should be able to recite poetry. Come forward. You are going to spend the remainder of the class period seated in the dunce chair at the front of the schoolhouse! Uh…Um…Th-h-h-e…Uh…
10
Man, I feel bad for Kyle! His face turned bright red!

It was not uncommon for many families of more than seven or eight members to live in a one-room log cabin such as this one. Welcome! Come inside and gather around. This is the Casper Ott Cabin where the Ott family lived in the 1800s. Space is definitely tight, but everything seems to be tidy and in its place. They still used metal pots and pans in the pioneer times just like we do now. But, what is that hay sticking out of the bed over there?
12
Lunchtime! Well, that was how the pioneers made a soft bed to sleep on. They made mattresses out of hay. In fact, a pioneer child about your age probably made that bed himself. It was not uncommon for some pioneer children not to have to go to school back in those days. In fact, not very many children did go to school. Excuse me John, but why is there hay sticking out of that bed mattress over there?
13
I only have an apple and one chocolate chip cookie left!
Oh Man! I only have an apple and one chocolate chip cookie left! I hope that all of your parents packed you a nice lunch that a real pioneer child would have had. Ugh, this is only bread and butter! How could pioneers eat such bland food every day?
14
No way! I could not eat this everyday!
It was not uncommon for pioneers to have to ration their food carefully, as there was only enough food to eat as the father and son had time to hunt. You mean you couldn’t just get in the car and drive to the supermarket for groceries? No way! I could not eat this everyday! Do you all like your pioneer lunches? No, I’m afraid not.

Pioneer day was so much fun
Pioneer day was so much fun! This was one field trip that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

The End!
