Length and perimeter GM1.1 Support Plenary How many different sized rectangles can you draw that have a perimeter of 20 cm? You may find squared paper useful! Here is one to start you off. Preamble A relatively straightforward activity, but it should be recognised that pupils of this capability can sometimes try to find perimeters by adding the lengths of only two sides. Pupils attention should be drawn to the correct use of units. A useful extra activity, should time permit, would be to ask pupils to estimate the perimeter of their classroom. Possible content Perimeters of rectangles, with some elements of pattern spotting. Resources Squared paper. Solutions/Notes These are the differently dimensioned rectangles (all lengths should be in centimetres). 1 × 9 2 × 8 3 × 7 4 × 6 5 × 5
