Symbiosis
2
Symbiosis Symbiosis describes a close, long lasting relationship between two different types of organisms.
3
Three types of Symbiotic Relationships
Parasitism Commensalism Mutualism
4
Parasitism One organism, called the parasite, benefits from living off the body of another organism the host. Ex. A hookworm takes blood and nutrients from its host and while it benefits the host is harmed.
5
Commensalism One organism benefits and the other is not affected.
Ex. An elf owl makes its nest in a hole in a cactus. The owl benefits, and the cactus is not affected.
6
Mutualism Both organisms benefit.
EX. Cleaner shrimp eat parasites attached to fish. Both the shrimp and the fish benefit from this relationship.
