1 Respirator Selection based on OSHA APFs
Scott Shinn, CIH, Technical Service Specialist, 3M Company

2 AGENDA Types of Respiratory Protection Definitions
Respirator Selection Process Examples of Acceptable Respiratory Protection

3 Respiratory Protection
Air Purifying Respirator Negative Pressure Respirator

4 Respiratory Protection
Air Purifying Respirator Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR)

5 Respiratory Protection
Atmosphere Supplying Respirator

6 Respiratory Protection
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

7 Definitions Assigned Protection Factor (APF)
the workplace level of respiratory protection that a respirator or class of respirators is expected to provide to employees when the employer implements a continuing, effective respiratory protection program.

8 Definitions Maximum Use Concentration (MUC)
the maximum atmospheric concentration of a hazardous substance from which an employee can be expected to be protected when wearing a respirator, and is determined by the APF of the respirator and the exposure limit of the hazardous substance. (APF X OEL) OEL = Occupational Exposure Limit

9 Definitions Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH)
an atmosphere that poses an immediate threat to life, would cause irreversible adverse health effects, or would impair an individual's ability to escape from a dangerous atmosphere.

10 Respiratory Protection Program
Per 29 CFR Written Respiratory Protection Program must include… Procedures for selecting respirators Medical evaluation Fit testing Use of respirators Maintenance and care of respirators Breathing air quality and use Training Program evaluation Recordkeeping

11 Respirator Selection Process
Exposure Assessment Typically determined through air monitoring Determine APF Required Concentration in Air ÷ OEL (C/OEL) APF Table Other Considerations

17 Example 1: Styrene OEL = 50 ppm
Voluntary TWA-OEL for Styrene Industry Exposure Respiratory Protection ≤ 500 ppm Half Facepiece with OV Cartridge Any other organic vapor or supplied air respirator with an APF ≥ 10 > 500 ppm to ≤ 1250 ppm PAPR with OV Cartridge and Hood/Helmet, or Loose Fitting Facepiece Continuous flow supplied-air system with Hood/Helmet, or Loose Fitting Facepiece Any other organic vapor or supplied air respirator with an APF ≥ 25 > 1250 ppm to ≤ 2500 ppm Full Facepiece with OV Cartridge Any other organic vapor or supplied air respirator with an APF ≥ 50 > 2500 ppm to < 5000 ppm PAPR with OV Cartridge and Full Facepiece or Hood/Helmet(1) Continuous flow supplied-air system with Full Facepiece or Hood/Helmet(1) ≤ 5000 ppm (IDLH) SCBA (1) Manufacturer must demonstrate protection factor of 1000

18 Example 2: Styrene OEL = 20 ppm
ACGIH TLV-TWA for Styrene Exposure Respiratory Protection ≤ 200 ppm Half Facepiece with OV Cartridge Any other organic vapor or supplied air respirator with an APF ≥ 10 > 200 ppm to ≤ 500 ppm PAPR with OV Cartridge and Hood/Helmet, or Loose Fitting Facepiece Continuous flow supplied-air system with Hood/Helmet, or Loose Fitting Facepiece Any other organic vapor or supplied air respirator with an APF ≥ 25 > 500 ppm to ≤ 1000 ppm Full Facepiece with OV Cartridge Any other organic vapor or supplied air respirator with an APF ≥ 50 > 1000 ppm to < 5000 ppm PAPR with OV Cartridge and Full Facepiece or Hood/Helmet(1) Continuous flow supplied-air system with Full Facepiece or Hood/Helmet(1) ≤ 5000 ppm (IDLH) SCBA (1) Manufacturer must demonstrate protection factor of 1000
