5. Jamestown London company sends expedition in 1606
Land in America in 1607
Sailed up Chesapeake Bay
Further up the James River
Named after King James
Sailed with 144 men
Called the settlement Jamestown

6. Jamestown Faces Problems
Location was a good spot to:
Trade
Defend themselves
Not good for Farming
Very swampy
Full of mosquitoes
Poor drinking water
None had ever lived in a wilderness before

7. Smith Takes Charge John Smith takes charge of the settlement
Orders people to:

9. Plantation Economy Grow new crop

Will ship thousands of pounds to Europe
Built large plantations
Used Indentured servants for labor
People who would work 3-7 years to pay for their passage to America

10. Slaves Arrive 1619 Dutch ship brings first slaves to America
Treated as indentured servants
Some later became free men

11. Self-Government London Company set up a council to run the colony
Established the House of Burgesses
First representative lawmaking body
Meet for the first time in 1619
1624, King James I will take control of the colony
Becomes a royal colony
