1 Fri 5/17 Agenda: IN Question Complete Biomes Flip-book OUT Question

2 In: pg.84 What characteristics make one biome different from another?
Some examples of biomes are the tropical rain forest, the desert, the tundra, and the grasslands… What characteristics make one biome different from another?

3 Pg.85 – Biomes Flip-Book Fold and glue in Biomes flip-book
Complete entire flip-book using pg in your textbook

4 Homework Finish Biome Booklet & Questions

5 Out – pg.84 If you had your choice, which biome would you chose to live in and why?

6 Mon. 5/20 Agenda: IN Question (Circle Map)
Article & Questions – “This Land is Whose Land?” OUT Questions

7 In: pg.86 Use the Biodiversity fact sheet to create a circle map. Biodiversity 10 facts

8 Pg.87 Article: This is Whose Land?
What was the Garcia’s issue? When was the Endangered Species Act enacted by Congress? What does the Endangered Species Act make it illegal to do? Why couldn’t the Garcia’s plow a fire break? What kinds of species do you think people would consider “less important”? In your opinion, what characteristics would make a species less important? Why do scientists say that species are “part of a puzzle”? What happened to the mussels in Alabama? What consequences did this have for other animals? How is a diversity of species important to medicine? What affect do human activities have on the rate of extinction of species? Why do scientist say that we could afford to lose some species? Do you think the Stephan’s kangaroo rat should be protected under the ESA? Why? Should we save every species no matter what? Why? Should property owners be compensated for land they set aside for endangered species? Why?

9 Homework Finish Article Questions

10 Out – pg.86 How does biodiversity affect the ecosystem?
How does biodiversity affect humans?

11 Last INB Check and Ecology Test are THURSDAY!!!!
Tues 5/21 Last INB Check and Ecology Test are THURSDAY!!!! Interpret the relationships between organisms and their physical environment.

12 Human population Human population is experiencing exponential growth.
As of October 12, 1999, the human population on earth was 6 billion. As of 2006, it was more than 6.5 billion. As of October 31, 2012 it reached 7 billion!!!

13 What do you think our carrying capacity is?
How many people can the earth hold? World population clock

14 Population density is the # if organisms in a particular area at a given time.
Regions with the highest population size do not necessarily have the highest population density, since land area is an important variable in calculating population densities China had a population in 2004 of 1,300,100,000 with a density of 136 people/square kilometer Japan had a population of 127,600,000 with a density of 338 people/square kilometer

15

16 In: pg.88 What is the difference between population size and population density? Where is the greatest human population density on the globe?

17 Pg.89 - “World Population”
Watch the “World Population” clip. What are 5 things you notice about human population growth?

18 Demographic transition
Demography is the study of statistics about human population. Less developed countries with higher death rates tend to have higher birth rates. This leads to a bottom heavy pyramid. This means there are lots of young people and fewer older people. As a countries develop, death rates decrease (normally due to better nutrition and health care), birth rates also decrease. This leads to a pyramid that is about equal at the top and bottom. This means there is an equal amount of younger and older people.

19 Demographic Pyramids

20 Pg.91 - Power of the Pyramids
Pg.90 - Analysis Questions Which of the countries is “more developed”? Why? Which of the countries is “less developed”? Why? What do the pyramids tell you about a population? What is a demographic transition? Which country(ies) has undergone a “demographic transition”? Pg.91 - Power of the Pyramids Do 3-pick one side. Tape data table and graphs here!

21 Homework Finish “Power of the Pyramids”

22 Out Why do you think countries undergo the demographic transition?
Why does birth rate decrease as a country becomes more developed?

23 Last INB Check and Ecology Test are TOMORROW!!!!
