College of Nursing - Houston Cultural Diversity is More than Race or Religion – You Just Have to Be There! Sandra K. Cesario, PhD, RNC, FAAN THE COURSE ASSIGNMENTS EVALUATION & REFLECTION NURS 6002 Multicultural Nursing A 4-day intensive cultural immersion experience that expands the concept of experiential learning Broad definition of culture – any group with common bond, language, or practices A required course in the PhD Nursing Science curriculum Course Description Focuses on development of the student as a member of a culture within the context of a global paradigm. Students will develop an appreciation for their own culture as well as appreciation of other cultures. Universal view will result in the development of a theoretical framework for the incorporation of cultural competence at each level of doctoral study and post-doctoral practice. Nomination Provided a personal encounter with many cultures including food and cultural practices. This allows me to better connect with each culture and increased my understanding of the healthcare needs and challenges various cultures face. Discussion Board Contract for a personally meaningful project or paper Comments from Past Evaluations The best aspect of this course was: Interaction with community leaders and learning about culturally-appropriate resources that will improve care Learning to be open to a wide variation in health & illness perceptions Instilled a desire to learn more about the community in which I live Reflecting upon the biases that I did not realize I had Provided information that is easily applied to my role as a nurse Learning that we have unique identities and ideals, but “human-ness” crosses all boundaries Evolution of Field Experience Itinerary 20 years of feedback regarding relevance of community experiences has given students a voice in the evolution of this course. My personal belief that cultural awareness and sensitivity facilitate the acquisition of attitudes, skills, and knowledge that allow the nurse to function at the highest level to promote health equity and social justice.
